Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa addressing the nations at the Independence Day ceremony today said the country had been able to win true freedom by defeating the separatist terrorism.
"Although every year in the past we have commemorated our Independence, through 30 years we have lived in the midst of an illegal, armed, terrorist movement. Therefore, throughout this period we could not celebrate true Freedom," the President said at the ceremony held today to celebrate the country's 61st anniversary of independence from the colonial rule.
"I am proud to announce that today we celebrate the independence of the motherland that is being united," he said.
